What a Typical ‘ Club’

Pre Match – Goalkeeper Warm up – should look like

With young players (miniroos) who rotate the goalkeeper position i would suggest that they warm up as if they were a player, and not do a separate goal keeper warm up.

Afterall at this level we want to develop Goalkeepers as keeper sweepers, and develop players who can play like an extra outfield player when in goal.

So the guidelines below are more for players who have decided that they want to be a goal keeper, rather than an outfield player.

Part A:1 – Dynamic range of motion exercises

  • Dynamic based (non ball) warm up (incorporating dynamic range of motion exercises) – as players age this becomes more and more important
  • If the the players are doing a dynamic range of motion warm up at the start of the warm up, the the goal keepers can do it with the players

Part A:2 – Get a feel for the ball (feet)

  • The goal keeper could join in with the players at this point, and do the touch work the players are doing. Younger players especially need to do this.

Or

  • The goalkeeper can do separate goal keeper specific touch work

Part B:1 – Ball Handling

  • Get the goalkeeper to catch the ball at different heights and ways

Part B:2 – Work on Distribution

  • Get the goalkeeper to distribute the ball in different ways
